Luisa Strina na Frieze New York 2020
Galeria Luisa Strina is proud to display an exclusive presentation of works by Cildo Meireles from 1973 until 2019. Considering Meireles' concern in creating works that could circulate beyond the art system — such as his iconic 'Insertions into ideological circuits' — we selected an array of multiple works, such as 'Zero Dollar' and 'Zero Cruzeiro', 'Camelô' (1998), 'Fontes' (1992/2008), Ovos (1970/2018); and included his latest editions: 'Shit coin' (2017-2019) and ‘Isto’ (2019). Rare drawings from the early seventies, as well as the study/object for one of his earliest works 'Estojo de Geometria (Neutralização por Oposição e/ou Adição)' (1977) are on display for the first time. Historical works, such as ‘Metros’ (1977-1993) and ‘Virtual Corners’ (1967/68-2008) are shown alongside 'Lona I' and 'Lona II: Tenda' important paintings on canvas from the eighties, blurring the lines between object, painting, and installation. Cildo Meireles (1948, Rio de Janeiro) is one of the most influential artists today. With a career that spans over five decades, Meireles' work has an infinite vocabulary that is political, poetic, and rigorous, that completes itself with the presence of the spectator. His complex installations are informed by the social and political conditions of the dictatorship years in Brazil. Meireles merges physical, cerebral, and sensorial elements in works that elicit audience participation. While Meireles’s works are often created in response to specific political events and situations, they evoke universal themes that are communicated through the viewer’s experience in a shared, rigorously designed and defined space. Meireles' work has been exhibited around the world including 37th, 50th, 51st, and 53rd Venice Biennale; 16th, 20th, 24th, and 29th São Paulo Biennial; 6th and 8th Istanbul Biennial; and documenta Kassel, in 1992 and 2002.
