Exhibition Concept
· It is a redefinition of substances, material and scenes of everyday life
· It is a re-exploration of human condition and social ecology in the digital era
· It is also a reestablishment of people’ s attitude towards new aesthetic consumerism
Nowadays, men overly enjoy and rely on the production of manufacture and technology, which not only brings complicated social and environmental issues but also evokes emotionally turbulence and anxiety in our society. The “manufacturing aesthetics” leads to the standardization that neglects human’ s feelings. Excessive admiration towards data, order, laws and assembly lines also causes the “rejection” of social system, ecosystem and emotional system, namely the unbalance between nature and industry and between human emotions and digital world.
How will art get involved in the discussion of consumer culture? In what ways that substances and material control the structure and process of “manufacture”? How to break the behavioral and spiritual chains that “manufacture” brings? Trapped by manufacturing, human condition is being reflected again and again. In this exhibition, artists will try to deconstruct the unknown relationship between “manufacture” and human’ situation and social feeling, thus trigger the imagination of “manufacturing” and men’ active intervention.
Made In Illusion makes full use of the narration from substances and material themselves to reconstruct the ordinary field of living and ecosystem, and further discuss social issues like consumer culture and sustainable development. Through various art forms like paintings, devices, and new media art, nearly thirty artists all over the world are going to construct an immersive experience space and invite the audience to discuss and reflect on the symbiosis between social resources, living conditions and human’s mentality, and talk about the circulation system, the renewable capacity and cultural sense of belonging besides manufacture.
Here, every question demonstrates our wild imagination of the human condition or the living state in the future.
Production Zone
The artists make explanations or joke about the consumer culture, pop culture, art and fashion nowadays. By using abundant material and presenting forms, they construct physical and mental spaces, which provides a bright new insight for the audience. Ordinary scenes burst into some wonderful encounters while common elements in daily life have been given special meaning and become the protagonist; the alienated but fantastic way of display triggers the second introspection of the human condition, and normal, passive life is transformed into active resistance and reflection.
Testing Zone
As the exhibition is continuing, a series of devices of new media reveal the complicated relationship between human and advanced technology. All these invisible mediums like rays, numbers and codes refresh the concept of “substance” and our perception of the world. Are they also testing the role which technology intervenes in our lives? Here, the real space is overlapped with the digital world, and the boundary between virtuality and reality has been redefined. The audience will be participating in and testing of the surreal vision. The exploration of new-tech medium also demonstrates artists’ reflection of the fourth industrial revolution—how would technology promote the sustainable development? And how would the balance be achieved between nature and manufacture and between human emotion and digital world?
Recycling Zone
In the Recycling Zone the artists focus on the characteristics of material itself and processing and create particular field devices by using handwork and technology to deconstruct daily items and spaces. They extend the perception of the function and meaning of substance and reveal their neglected aspects of papers, cloth, plastics, metal and living waste, etc. By recycling and creating upon waste, second-hand items or ordinary products, much urban view that are different from the current ones has been built, which will guide the audience to concern about the value of the items and the issue of waste of resources. Substances have been deconstructed into raw material and reprocessed into new products. Since when and where the difference has been created as the former and new products are made of the same material? And why there is the difference?
Reseting Zone
The artists try to explore the nature of some untouchable material or substances. They combine ordinary items in daily life with pop culture icons and common mechanical devices which expands the original meaning of the items. Contained deep meaning, they reveal the profoundness within the daily life and create various sarcastic or straightforward languages that belonged to the items themselves. In the finished products area, a series of highly finished artworks are exhibited here. Has “manufacture” been finished? Since the original meaning of the items has been largely expanded, is the testing for them eligible? Or the connotation of “largely expansion” means the limitless explanation of the items? All of these remained to be tested.
